The A1 Quattro might be based on the three door, front-wheel-drive A1 hatchback but thanks to the German firm fitting the latest version with four-wheel-drive and a turbocharged 256bhp it makes more than a nostalgic nod to the iconic Ur-quattro of the Eighties, which is fondly remembered for being Gene Hunt’s motor of choice in the BBC show Ashes to Ashes.

Jaguar has said its XJ saloon is now available to order with both the Sport Pack, which adorns the luxury saloon with a host of sporty styling updates, and the Speed Pack, which gives owners the chance to match the grace with pace by upping the car’s top speed from 155mph to 174mph.

Ian Callum, director of design at Jaguar Cars, said: “The XJ is much more than a limousine. Its power and potential mean it can out-perform many so-called sports cars.

Earlier this month BMW announced the sixth generation of their compact executive express and now one of their great German rivals has hit back by completely revamping the Audi A4 that competes against it, with a new range of A4s, Allroads and S4s on their way to the UK early next year.
